CITATION 48TH NATIONAL MARITIME DAY CELEBRATIONS – 2011 VARUNA AWARD

Belonging to the Training Ship Dufferin batch of 1953-54, he joined M/s Scindia Steam Navigation Company as cadet in 1955 and later joined The Shipping Corporation of India where he rose to become Captain in 1964. From 1966-1974 he served as pilot with Bombay Port Trust and for next 2 years as Master with Torvan Shipping, Hong Kong.

The entrepreneur qualities in him gave birth to IMS Ship Management Pvt Ltd in 1976. During the last 35 years, he is spearheading a ship management business with services like manning, port operations, dredging and other infrastructure development activities.

IMS has assisted in placement of over 7000 Indian Officers and Crew for various shipping companies. He has represented Malaysia Ship Yard for sourcing Indian ships to dry-dock in Malaysia. In a joint venture with SHV Energy, a Dutch collaboration, he built up India’s first private LPG terminal of 8000 tons capacity in Porbunder, Gujarat.

In addition to carrying out Grain Lighterage operations and operating Multimodal Transport business , his company has also carried out ship agency functions including loading and discharging of cargo. He managed and operated JNPT port crafts from 1993 to 1997. The IMS Shipping Pte Ltd, a Singapore based company was set up by him in 1994, which is engaged in ship chartering business.

He has undertaken dredging operations on the East and West coast of India from 2001 and presently owns 3 cutter suction dredge units. He published India’s first shipping Transport Newspaper “Indian Shipping and Transport News” in all major ports of India from 1980-2001.

Association (FOSMA) from 1991-93, and currently is a Director. He is a trustee of Maritime Floating Staff Welfare trust. He is currently the Chairman of Mumbai Port Welfare Committee of the National Shipping Welfare Board under the aegis of International Committee on Seafarers’ Welfare (ICSW).

In appreciation of his sustained and outstanding contribution to the Indian Maritime Sector, the National Maritime Day Celebrations (Central) Committee confers the ‘VARUNA AWARD’ to Capt. Satish Chander Sood on this day, the 5th April 2011.
